Frequently Asked Questions
We don’t live in NYC. Do you offer Zoom lessons?
Yes! I was tutoring students outside of NYC on Skype before Zoom was even a thing! If you don’t live in NYC and are interested, please reach out. I also teach students on Zoom who live locally when schedules don’t permit in-person lessons. It’s a great platform for learning!
I’m an adult who never had a bar/bat mitzvah. Can you work with me?
Absolutely. While most of my students are pre-teens, I also teach adults. Sometimes I work with parents of students to teach them how to chant Torah so they can chant at their child’s bar/bat mitzvah. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you want to explore having an adult bar/bat mitzvah at any stage of your life!
How early do you recommend starting lessons?
Most students start about a year before their ceremony date. Some prefer a year and a half so as to have more breathing room. It also depends on what your child’s goals are. I have worked with students from everywhere between 6 months to 3.5 years!
How long are lessons?
Lesson length varies between 45 minutes and an hour depending on the curriculum and students’ desires.
Do you teach group classes?
No. Lessons are all one-on-one. The only exception is if siblings want to be tutored together. In that case, lessons typically are broken into sections, with a group element as well as one-on-one time to work on individual preparation.
You aren’t a Cantor or Rabbi—How is it that you can officiate?
There are no rules in Judaism that say that a Rabbi or a Cantor must be present at a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. In fact, your child becomes a bar/bat mitzvah the day they turn 13, whether or not they have a ceremony! I use my skills as a professional singer, my theatre background, and all of the knowledge I gained going to synagogue and Jewish Day School to craft and lead services that are incredibly meaningful.
Where do you officiate ceremonies?
Ceremonies can take place in event spaces, family homes/backyards, synagogues, restaurants, you name it! There are a couple of synagogues in NYC that can be rented out if that is your preference. I’d be happy to give some suggestions. I am also happy to travel out of NYC to officiate.
How much do you charge?
